A symbol of liberation, adventure, and vintage charm, the Volkswagen T2 Devon campervan holds a special place in popular culture and automotive history. As we prepare to put this T2 Devon Camper through our Spring auction, let’s explore what makes the T2 Devon bus an essential for those families and couples with an adventurous spirit.

A Brief History of the VW Campervan

The story of the 1970s VW camper van begins in the late 1940s when Volkswagen introduced the Beetle, following this up with the T1 Campervan. Launched in 1950, the first-generation VW camper, affectionately known as the ‘splitty’ or ‘split-screen’ due to its split windshield, quickly gained a reputation for its versatility. The T2, or “Bay Window” model, was introduced in 1967 with key improvements, including a larger body, better visibility, and enhanced safety features. It quickly became the go-to vehicle for travellers, those with extreme sport hobbies, and free spirits looking to embrace the open road.

Evolution of the VW Camper Up Until 1973

By 1973, the VW camper had undergone several changes that made it even more appealing for adventure seekers. Some key improvements from earlier models included:

1. Stronger Build: The transition from the T1 to the T2 brought a sturdier unibody construction and improved aerodynamics.

2. Larger Windows: The T2 featured the signature “bay window” design, offering better visibility and a brighter interior.

3. More Powerful Air-cooled Engines: A new 1.6L was fitted with options up to 2.0L, improving reliability and performance on long journeys, particularly when cruising at motorway speeds where the higher displacement engine can sit comfortably at 65mph.

4. Better Suspension & brakes: The T2 introduced a new front axle and disc brakes with independent rear suspension, making for a smoother and more efficient driving

What Makes the T2 Devon Camper Different?

Among the various conversions available, the Devon campervan is symbolic of British vision and creativity – unlike the popular Westfalia models, Devon Conversions was the official UK-based VW converter, known for its practical yet stylish interior layouts. The Devon featured:

1. Signature Pop-Top Roof: Providing extra headroom and additional sleeping space, perfect for family road trips.

2. Compact yet Functional Interior: Cleverly designed storage, fold-out tables, and a well-thought-out kitchen area made these campers a home on wheels.

3. British Excellence: While Westfalias had a more European feel, the Devon was tailored for UK adventurers, making it unique among campervan enthusiasts.

Why the T2 Devon is the Ultimate Adventure Companion

What the Press Said Back in the Day

When it was new, the VW T2 was praised for its practicality and adventure-ready nature. A 1973 review from Motor Magazine stated:

“The Volkswagen Devon camper is proof that good things come in compact packages. Comfortable, reliable, and perfect for the great outdoors, it’s the ideal vehicle for those who want to take their home with them wherever they go.”

Similarly, a 1972 review from Autocar described it as:

“A van that defies its commercial roots—smooth to drive, impressively spacious, and capable of taking you anywhere.”

Market Values: How Much is a 70s VW Camper Van Worth Today?

The market of 70s VW camper vans remains strong but there is lots of choice. Values are extremely varied and lower prices can often be indicative of some serious problems. The earlier ‘split screen’ models tend to command higher prices but these are not without their risks.

As a rough guide on values, TCC’s data indicates:

Project Vans: £7,000 – £12,000

Usable, Unrestored Examples: £12,000 – £17,000

Restored VW Camper Vans for Sale: £25,000-30,000

Concours Condition: £50,000+

Fully restored, original 1973 VW camper vans for sale can fetch top prices at auctions, especially rare models with desirable conversions like the Devon.

TCC’s Cool Camper of Choice:

We’ve hand picked this T2 Devon Camper, not because we love the colour combination but because of its awesome story. Restored in 2013-14, Bertie benefitted from a complete ground-up restoration, including new panels, a recommissioned engine and new interior. The final result was featured in the Summer 2014 edition of Volks World Camper Magazine.

The current owners have taken this camper all around the UK with their now grown up three children and over the course of their ten years of ownership, they’ve also maintained ‘Bertie’ to superior levels; with in excess of £10,000 spent over their period of ownership.

Having been offered many VW buses in our first year of business, we accepted this example because it is an honest example that we believe will offer lots of value to its new owner’s lives.
