Description

The M535i Background

Building upon the success of the E12 535i, the mid-range saloon that became the go-to transportation for middle management, the BMW E28 M535i signalled a very new era for BMW. It was the model that spawned road-going performance saloons with two-letter alpha-numeric badges that every young boy dreamt of owning. The BMW 535i and its high-performance sibling, the M535i, became legends, inspiring engineers to create the perfect recipe for the first-generation M5.

With a kerb weight of almost 1,400kg, the BMW M535i is far lighter than today’s M5. This is one of the key factors that made it such a desirable package to inform the M5. Up front, the naturally aspirated 3.4-litre ‘M30’ inline-six offered around 215bhp and 229lb/ft of torque, sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. This quintessentially classic BMW setup came bereft of the all-wheel-drive systems common today.

The E28 M535i utilised a suspension setup shared with the E12 535i, featuring Bilstein dampers, shorter stiffer springs, and slightly thicker sway bars. While it didn’t quite match the handling of the E28 M5, the classic 5 Series BMW offered confident handling that made it a joy for middle-management Europeans to take the long way home.

The BMW 535i’s exciting configuration of rear-wheel drive, inline-six orchestral sound, and deployable power paved the way for the M5, cementing its place in history.
