Description
Range Rover Classic Overfinch 5.7 HSi
Its 1996, Prodigy has unleashed Breathe upon the world, and the final Range Rover classic to be made has left the midlands facility. Cruising around at the same time, was this 1994 Range Rover Classic, which would become the last one to be sent to Overfinch for performance upgrades.
Overfinch’s 5.7 litre V8 engined conversion pushes out 330bhp to provide a 0-60 time of 6.4 seconds. BIG numbers for the mid-1990s and possibly one of the first ‘fast SUV’s’, foreshadowing the high-performance SV editions that Range Rover would later launch.
Its high-performance V8 and uprated suspension and brakes meant it could outperform a Bentley Turbo RT, Jaguar XK8 Coupe and Boxster Tiptronic at the Millbrook Circuit. Times verified by Datron Technology Ltd who carry our timed accelerations.
Jeremy Clarkson once described this as the only Range Rover to drive…
And now you can.
What was the difference between Overfinch and Range Rover?
The Overfinch Range Rover Classic 5.7 represents a masterclass in performance engineering, distinguished by the British marque’s comprehensive modifications to the standard Range Rover. At its core is the renowned Chevrolet 5.7-liter V8 engine, a powerhouse favoured by some of the most iconic vehicles in automotive history, including the Chevrolet Corvette and Camaro. This engine’s reputation for robust performance and reliability made it the perfect choice for Overfinch’s ambitious reimagining of the Range Rover Classic.
Overfinch took this proven engine platform and made it even more formidable. Enhancements include a custom-tuned fuel injection system and a high-lift camshaft, designed to maximise airflow and fuel delivery for an output of around 340 horsepower—significantly outperforming the original Range Rover’s offerings. The engine modifications are complemented by a free-flow stainless steel exhaust system that not only reduces back pressure but also provides a distinct, resonant exhaust note, evocative of its American muscle car heritage. An upgraded cooling system, featuring a high-capacity radiator and performance oil cooler, ensures that the engine maintains optimal temperatures under all conditions. This blend of power and refinement, combined with Overfinch’s bespoke tuning, gives this Range Rover Classic an unmistakable character that is both luxurious and exhilarating to drive even by modern standards.
The original cost to achieve such an inimitable car was around £48,000 in the mid-1990s, the equivalent of over £110,000 in 2024.
About this Range Rover Classic by Overfinch:
The current owner, Ian, has lovingly enjoyed this Range for almost 20 years, purchasing the car directly from Overfinch in 2006, approximately six years after the Overfinch conversion was carried out.
In 1998 an independent assessment by Off Road & Four Wheel Drive Magazine carried out an independent speed appraisal at Millbrook Proving Ground, finding that the Range Rover Classic 5.7 HSi could achieve a 6.43 second time from standing to 60mp – a copy of this letter is present with the folder.

Overfinch Range Rover Mechanical Condition:
The vehicle has been well maintained throughout its life by the current and existing owners, benefitting from tens of thousands of maintenance work since 2007 alone. This included a top end rebuild to refresh the pistons, piston rings, hone the cylinders, fit new gaskets and valves.
These engines are common for oil leaks but there don’t appear to any as shown in the imagery.
Brakes are in good order and the power steering works as normal.
The owner has fitted coil-overs to replace the air suspension as this was known to go wrong.
