Restoration History:

Bertie started out life in Pastel White with a black and white vinyl interior, receiving a nut and bolt restoration in the mid-2000s, including an engine rebuild, which made the perfect foundations for a bespoke camper build as detailed in the summer 2014 edition of Volks World Camper.

The previous keeper, purchased Bertie to create their dream camper, sending the vehicle to esteemed camper specialist Ken Fox for additional rectification work, including precautionary welding, with some panels replaced and Waxoyl applied to the underside in 2013. This was to bring the previous restoration to highest of standards. A respray was also commissioned of the engine bay and an interior upgrade, adding oak worktops with piano hinges to hide the cooker before replacing the sink with a stowage compartment. The oak theme has been incorporated throughout with various stainless steel items.

A re-trim of the seating, door cards, and internal panels in Cab to Hide Green leather with off-white piping and bespoke stitching was carried out by Keith Reynolds of Ken’s Customers in Derbyshire, which is paired with a new headlining and wool check fabric curtains. Up front, a Bambus parcel shelf is fitted for additional stowage, while the original radio has been preserved with a modern head unit neatly slotted into the glovebox, featuring DAB/CD and bluetooth connectivity.

In 2015 the bus was acquired by Dave and Sarah who have used it as intended:

Former owners of Bertie, the VW t2 campervan for sale with TCC

‘’We’ve owned ‘Bertie’ for ten years and in that period, we’ve enjoyed many trips around the UK together and with our three, now adult children. Bertie has never let us down on the road, and been the perfect companion for country escapes, offering ample room and conveniences for our family as we’ve travelled coast to coast. We will be sad to say goodbye, but it’s time for another family to take advantage of Bertie’s reliability and enviable character. Rest assured, we’ve given Bertie whatever it needs during our ownership, so you can turn the key and enjoy.’’

Exterior Condition:

  • The paintwork is in exceptional condition having benefitted from the respray 10 years ago – there are no obvious scratches or chips
  • The current owners have had some preventative welding carried out in their ownership, also treating the undercarriage with Waxoyl
  • Bumperettes, badges and exterior chrome is straight, without dents and all present
  • Front and rear lights are clear without any oxidation
  • All windows are clear and without chips, with VW branded glass all round
  • The Canterbury Pitt Pop-Top is in good condition without any rips to the heavy-duty canvas
  • All seals are in place with no signs of leaks
  • All four tyres are in good condition
  • The BRM 5.5×15 alloys would benefit from refurbishment due to normal wear and tear

Interior Condition:

  • The front passengers side door is missing one fastening bolt but this doesn’t impact operation of the door
  • The driver’s sun visor requires reattaching to the upper trim
  • All leather seats, benches, door cards, panels and consoles are in fantastic condition with no rips at the seams or piping, stains or excessive creasing
  • The original plastic dashboard is in good condition with no cracks / peels
  • All dials work as expected, as does the sound system
  • All hinges and closures for cupboards and storage work as they should
  • The LVT flooring is firm and with no stains or signs of peeling
  • All LED lights and sockets to the rear work as expected
  • There is a slight crack on the inside of the glovebox but nothing too concerning or visible from the outside
  • The gear markers are faded but this can be expected given this is over 50 years old

Mechanicals:

  • Having benefitted from an engine build and a strict annual servicing regime, the 1,600cc engine performs exceptionally well, with twin Weber carbs offering improved fuelling for improved performance
  • The current owners report that over the course of their ownership, in excess of £10,000 has been spent on maintenance to ensure use for family holidays and weekend trips. All bills have been retained to support works carried out.
